"Merry Christmas to All"—My First-Ever Christmas Song!

“Merry Christmas to All” is my newest released single. It’s a one-man project in which I wrote, played, sang, recorded, and mixed it. Only the mastering was done by someone else, the much esteemed Joao Carvalho.

“Merry Christmas to All” was written very slowly at first—the chorus was started in the 90s, and the rest was added very recently and very quickly—as I was given a deadline by the SongTalk Radio Podcast, which made me finish it.

The lyrics actually came pretty easily when I put myself in my seven-year-old self’s shoes. Back when I believed in Father Christmas, nothing was as exciting as going to bed with empty stockings and waking up to find them full.

Even when I knew it was my parents filling the stockings, it was still magical. Growing up in England in the 1970s, you were lucky if you got much snow at all in winter, but if it snowed on Christmas Day, well, it was beyond magical.

So I got that down in the verses, put in some sleigh bells and chimes and got to work recording in my home studio. All the ideas for the backing vocals just happened while I was singing the tune and needed to fill in spaces.

So here it is—my first-ever Christmas song—I hope it fills you with the childhood Christmas spirit I hopefully injected into it!
